Your privacy

This policy explains what information TravelWise (“we”, “us”) uses when you visit this website, how it’s used, and the choices you have. TravelWise is a free trip budget planner. You don’t need an account, and we don’t ask for your name, email address or payment details to use it.
Information you enter
To work out a trip’s cost we use the details you type in: where you’re starting from and going, dates, number of adults and kids, rooms, travel style and budget. These are sent to our server only to search places and return results, and are not stored or linked to you. Any figures you change on a result stay in your browser and are gone when you leave the page.
Your location
We only ask your browser for your location when you click Use my location or Show places near me, and your browser asks for your permission first. If you allow it:
- your position, rounded to about 1 km, is sent to our server to find the nearest city. We don’t store it;
- the name of that city is saved in your browser’s local storage for up to 12 hours, so the trip calculator and budget finder can start from it. It never leaves your device except to find places near it;
- if you’ve already allowed location for this site, we may refresh your nearest city when you visit, without asking again.
You can refuse or withdraw location access at any time in your browser’s site settings, and clear the saved city by clearing this site’s data in your browser.
Cookies and advertising
TravelWise doesn’t set cookies of its own and doesn’t use analytics. We show ads from Google AdSense, which uses cookies and similar technologies:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google’s Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.

If you’re in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, you’ll be asked for your consent before personalised ads or cookies that need consent are used, and you can change your choice at any time.
Services we use to build results
Our server, not your browser, asks these services for data. They receive the place being searched, not information that identifies you:
- Geoapify (with OpenStreetMap data) for hotels, restaurants, sights and rentals near a city;
- GeoNames for finding smaller towns in search;
- ExchangeRate-API for daily exchange rates;
- World Bank price-level data, which is built into the site.
Results link to other websites, such as Booking.com, Google Maps and Viator. When you follow a link, that website’s own privacy policy applies.
Server logs
Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time) to run the site securely and fix problems. We don’t use them to identify you or for advertising, and they’re kept only as long as needed for those purposes.
Children
TravelWise isn’t directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the European Economic Area), and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information, or to object to its use. Because we don’t keep personal information on our servers, there’s usually nothing for us to return or delete, but you can contact us with any request or question. For advertising data held by Google, use Google’s Ads Settings.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as TravelWise changes. We’ll change the date at the top when we do.
